Anti-quota pitch on Net, phone
- Protesters use technology to organise
OUR BUREAU

April 9: If word of mouth brought some of the country’s young out on the streets after the Mandal Commission recommendations for job quotas, this time the Internet and the mobile phone are being used to organise against expanding reservation in educational institutions.

As some 3 lakh aspirants to the IITs wrote their joint entrance examination papers today, the World Wide Web was aflame with campaigns against reservation for other backward classes (OBCs).

Petitions are being made on the Net to the President, Prime Minister and at times to entities like the “Next Generation”, in the manner of Rang de Basanti, the movie.

Support for the quota could not be found.

“This (quota) is more of a political move to gain something in the short term…. If (planners) wished to eliminate backwardness, they could start from grassroots,” writes Sarsij Nayanam, who has petitioned the President, on the site PetitionOnline.com.

The site hosts online campaigns from all over the world to promote “participatory democracy”. The top three petitions, signed by many current and former students of institutions like IITs and IIMs, are protests against the quota.

The highest circulated one, started by Nayanam on April 7, is close to the 10,000-signature-mark.

Nayanam, who studied at the Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi, said in an email: “If such a thing ever gets implemented, then just think of the rift that will be created between the two classes.”

He says most of the people who have signed are “studying in the institutes” and “there is a large section which has just passed…. And, as expected, IITians, present and former, have participated in (sic) a large scale.”

Mobile phone messages are flying around to organise protests. One said: “IF u r giving yr class 12 exams or trying fr a masters, 50% of all seats are now reservd. Lets start a campaign against this insanity. Pass this on to everyone.”

Another (in picture) gave a call to join a protest in Delhi. It said two TV channels “have promised their support”, adding the third element of communication technology to the campaign.

Blogs, personal diaries on the Net, are speaking out, too. Vivek K writes with a touch of irony: “Create high facility community school where only weaker community people are taken without any test.”

One campaign ends on a patriotic note, taking its queue from Rang de Basanti: “All we need is a ‘Generation Awakening’…. And if you disagree with me then be ready to face a ‘not so good’ India.”

If quota supporters are organising, there’s at least no sign of it in the new-generation media. One SMS began to circulate tonight, but that too as a response.

“U mite be against reservation bt dnt forget we do live in a highly unequal society,” it said

Hey guyz n galz! wassup?? as u might have seen and read in d news recently, all the medical colleges of delhi had organised a protest against the proposed increase in the reservation for OBCs. considering the immense power of the students and the immense strength shown by them, our HRD minister Arjun Singh had to meet the representatives of the students. But he used the ongoing assembly elections as his card and has said that he has been asked by the Election Commission not to comment on the issue till the elections are over. we clearly understand that he is shying away from answering on the question and using elections only to buy time so that the issue dies down. unfortunately, we cannot force him to say anything right now and we would have to wait for the elections to get over before we can again go to him. but all of us have pledged not to let the fire burn out and instead use this time which we have got to mobilise the youth of india. we have gone on an indefinite strike from that day onwards and are not attending classes since. now i ask everyone of u to please support our cause and come forward to join our protest so that this movement can turn into a nationwide protest. ask your friends, your seniors and everyone else you know to join this protest. we have decided to give arjun singh time till 24hrs after the elections are over...that is till the 12th of May. he is welcome to answer our queries till then failing which we would once again take to the streets and he'd come to know the real power of the students. our efforts will be to organise nationwide strikes and protest rallies after that. what we want is that this protest not be restricted to just the medical faculty. let all the students be united and put up a united front against this injustice. we have already recieved promising support from other medical colleges of the country as well as from iits and some colleges of Delhi University. the only thing left now is to spread it to each and every college of the country. please talk to everyone around you and be prepared to organise and join rallies in your cities on the 12th. take the initiative and utilise this opportunity that we have got. it's now or never. Rise Youth of India and show the politicians we won't take this lying down.

Folks

While I am comfortable placed in the corporate world and not directly affected by reservations anymore i still remember the 90s,when Mandal came in,with a sense of bitterness.

This issue goes beyond an education, career or a job for each one of us.

The country is at a cross roads and if we sit quietly now we may be set on a path each one of us will regret for a lifetime.

In the same breath let us also remember that we will need to take the underprivileged along with us in creating an India truely shining. So think and act for them also.

Reservations as a means of doing that has failed utterly and we should oppose it by all means.

I have just one request from you all. Come out onto the streets and make your presence felt. Don't sit in your rooms or go about your daily work pretending to remain unaffected by this issue.

only 2 options
either change the system
or adopt a new system

either fight to change india not caring that you will loose your life for better youth of tomorrow like bhagat singh

or

marry a nri girl and go to usa to be treated as first grade citizen

the choice is yours,, but adopt the first way only hard guts are deep withing you

PostPosted: Thu May 18, 2006 2:34 pm    Post subject: Anti- Reservation Drive--

Hi All,

Non- Violence is always been the core value of our country and if our generation follows it then they have brutally beaten by police. This is the right time for all of us to unite together to join medical students/ dctors and pass the message to the government that now we will not tolerate any brutality for their vote bank.

We all are planning to go to AIIMS on Saturday at 10:30am . If anybody want to really contribute toward this anti-reservation protest ..Join us there .....

Regards
Amit Jain

PostPosted: Mon May 22, 2006 8:14 pm    Post subject: Why Government is affraid of

Any literate person, can understand very well what is the actual intention of the Government behind the reservation policy i.e. just the attraction of Vote Banks, But I'd like to remind This Government that , Just same as Zinnah is remembered for the Indo-Pak Division, This Government and Special Arjun Singh shall be remembered as the victim of Dividing the uniting next generation who till now believes in Hard work, Talent and self confidence. On the other hand It will definitely lead to a continuous degradation of educational system.

If the Government really wants to take care of backwards and economically weak communities, why can't they open totally separate well established, and furnished Institutions for such weaker people , whose expenditure is borne by deductions from Salaries of all MPs , MLAs etc.

Carry On Friends I'm also with you

any one willing any help in this regard
can contact me on alok1only@gmail.com
